help haiti {round 2}

I've totaled up the bids and we raised $881 for Haiti with our first auction! That is more than I expected to raise, and I am hoping to raise even more with the second auction. And, as an added bonus! My boss, Holly Peterson, owner of The Ball Studio, donated $119 so that we could meet our goal of $1000. Thank you so much, Holly! Now all that remains for the first round is for me to orchestrate the receiving of funds and the shipping of prints, which will probably take a few weeks. I will be emailing winners tonight!

Thanks so much to everyone who bid on the artwork. Thanks to the wonderful artists who made this possible. Thanks to everyone who passed the auction link around to their family and friends. I really appreciate the support, and I am so pleased that we are able to send a nice check to Mercy Corps.

And please! Don't neglect our newest selection of artwork up for auction! The work is fantastic, and there is more to come. Follow us on the RSS feed to keep updated with the new pieces added to the auction.

'underland', hamentaschen, ice skating, and the end of auction 1 {today}

i have just returned from a lovely and much-needed four-day vacation. it was my little sister's 9th birthday, and we went ice skating. besides many near misses, and a few actual tumbles, i think i mostly have my pride intact. we also made hamentaschen, which are 3-sided cookies with jelly or chocolate centers {yummm!} and my sisters and i saw the new 'alice in wonderland,' which was thoroughly enjoyable and extremely beautiful. i really needed this trip. i feel like my brain is re-calibrated and i can finally focus on what needs to happen for me in the next few months.

my parents live in bellingham, which is a very long train ride, so lots of time to think and lots of time to read. i also experimented a bit with the camera on my new phone. i shot some film as well and i can't wait to see how it turns out!

today is the last day of our first auction - we've raised 836 so far, which is fantastic. i'm still hoping for some last minute bids to get our total up to 1000! so bid away! you've got till 11:59 pm tonight.

i've begun receiving submissions for the second auction which begins tomorrow. i am blown away by the work, once again, and am so grateful to all of you for helping me get this project going. you are all amazing!

chile vs. haiti

as many of you know, impulse hosted the Help Haiti Auction Exhibit on saturday - the same day that we heard of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in chile. my parents lived in chile for a year, fairly close to the quake's epicenter. obviously i was dismayed to hear about another natural disaster so soon after the one in haiti, and in a place that i myself have visited and where my loved ones have people they care about. there was some discussion between the contributors of the art auction about how we would reference chile in our second auction - of course we would want to!

but fortunately, chile's infrastructure was better able to respond to this quake, and the area in which it struck is less populated and contains buildings that were meant to withstand earthquake damage. that's not at all to say that it doesn't matter, but in my mind, rather than taking attention from haiti, it further highlights why we should care about the tragedy in haiti.

haiti should have a government that is able to warn its people about natural disasters when possible. haiti should not be so overpopulated and so stricken by poverty that when disaster takes them by surprise, they lose 200,000 lives. haiti should not still be sitting alone without power, without homes for its people, among the wreckage of its country. and in the rest of the world, the 2010 winter olympics go on without a hitch. how much money goes into organizing an event like that? what if we refused to celebrate our own achievements until haiti is stabilized?

i realize we can't expect everyone to fix everything. i realize that i am sitting at my iMac right now, in my warm apartment, with clothing and a soft bed, and that i watched the amazing gold-medal olympic hockey game today, and enjoyed it immensely. i realize that i am lucky and that it's easy to postulate about what the world should be doing, and that i definitely don't have all the answers.

but i can't help thinking that we should be doing more. i can't help thinking that we can afford to do more. all of us. i've thought a lot about service lately - community service, public service, all of it. i'm facing a time in the next year where things could go any number of directions for me, and i'm starting to think seriously about one of the many volunteer options there are out there and which one will be right for me. i don't want to sit by and live my priveleged life while people are suffering. i want to do something!!!

but back to whether our second auction will send any of its proceeds to chile instead of haiti, i think that we will stick to the original plan. my love and thoughts go to the people of chile, and also my gratitude to the chilean government for caring about its people and making sure that it does what it can for them. i think haiti still needs our second auction.

i realize what we've done is small. but it's something. please bid on an art piece from our Help Haiti Auction. help us raise as much money as we can. thank you!

prett-t

today i have finished the last of the month's photo shoots. this relief is dampened slightly by the fact that there's still loads to do for the auction and for the exhibit on saturday! so i am feeling more than a little frazzled, and i know i'm not being as patient or good to myself (or people around me) as i should be. and sure proof that you get what you need, when you need it... this song just came on my last.fm radio: "i am not a robot" by marina & the diamonds.

you've been hanging with the unloved kids, who you never really liked and you never trusted, but you are so magnetic, you pick up all the pins, never committing to anything you don't pick up the phone when it ring, ring, rings, don't be so pathetic,

just open up and sing i'm vulnerable, i'm vulnerable I am not a robot

so! in the spirit of taking myself less seriously, i will now take a deep breath and share these model shots i took of thihi. i photographed her friend faith last year, and hopefully i'll be able to do a shoot with both of them sometime this spring. i took these on one of the nicer days a few weeks ago. she's beautiful and very nice, and has an envy-worthy wardrobe.

[caption id="attachment_249" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption="her hat reminds me of TLC haha"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_251" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption="i knew when i took the one on the right that this was going to be my favorite"][/caption]

and now i will take a justly deserved break from editing on the computer. i do it every day at work, and when i make work outside of work, it is a bad bad situation. time to catch up on my reading, cooking, and film photography! thanks for reading (if you are), and please don't forget to check out our Help Haiti Benefit Auction! Exhibit on Saturday, auction open till March 9.

generosity

in honor of the sunshine outside and the lovely hug-everything feelings that are welling up inside me because of it, i just wanted to say a few things about giving. this world has, in many ways, completely lost track of the commonality of each human being. we are all connected. we all live on this earth, and though our experiences, beliefs, and interests are all different, we are all the same creature! and even though we are spread all across the globe, we are still one tribe. and this tribe of humans - this herd, if you will, has lost sight of the importance of looking out for one another, and that deeply saddens me.

the earthquake in haiti did not happen to me. i have no societal obligation to care about it. it doesn't change the way i wake up, eat breakfast, and go to work. but what about my human obligation? i truly believe that the human collective shares a connectedness that is deeper than things like skin or social standing.

why not care? why not try to make things even a tiny little bit better for someone else you have never met? why not shop locally, buy fair-trade hot chocolate, and donate to a cause that will help the victims of that horrible earthquake, even in a small way? because, seriously. is it really going to inconvenience you that much? are you really going to shatter your cushion-y, priveleged american life by giving a little bit?

the answer is no. so do something! on this gorgeous, sunshine-filled day, when you are outside relaxing and enjoying the brief reprieve of our terrible oregon winter, please! think of sending some of that sunshine to someone else. make a bid on our charity auction! (see Help Haiti Auction link at top of page.) Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Even just go out and ride your bike instead of driving and save some resources. Donate your old clothes instead of throwing them away. And remember that we are all from this earth and we all deserve the same happiness.

m+d {ageless beauty}

megan has been my most constant model for years now - and it wasn't always fun: i once had to photograph her every single day for a month. the term 'photograph' became 'pester'. our collaborations have really improved since then, but the reasons she's a great model haven't changed: gorgeous blue eyes, fierce expressions, and glowy skin. this is one of my favorite shoots from this winter, mostly because i think the clothing and makeup work really well with the gloomy weather. we had to work fast before it began to rain profusely, and we were using the self-timer on my camera (which is always fun - you get to scurry back and forth and strike a pose before 10 seconds are up, especially good times in heels).

[caption id="attachment_120" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""...you can see it from the surface...""][/caption]

it was fun to play dress up. we felt like two little kids, prancing around in dresses and heels in drizzling, overcast weather. and, since the dress i wore belongs to megan's mother, we kind of were! we tried to go to a different location at first and were politely told that we were trespassing, but i used to run by our plan b property a few times a week and i wish it was mine! it has a beautiful little orchard and greenhouse.

[caption id="attachment_121" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""oceans won't freeze, so loosen your heart...""][/caption]

the song ageless beauty by stars came into my head while i was editing these and i couldn't get it out. i feel that the lyrics describe the concept we were working with: an audrey hepburn-style sort of elegance. ageless beauty embodies patience and contentedness. it is selfless love, the light that is so obvious, that "you can see it from the surface."

[caption id="attachment_122" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""we will always be a light""][/caption]

after we got rained out, we decided to use the window light in my kitchen, since we were all dressed up. it was rather cramped, but worth it.

[caption id="attachment_124" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""time will hold its promise""][/caption]

the way meg wrapped the scarf around her head reminds me of vermeer. all she needs is a pearl earring.

b. {in carnival-land}

originally, i wanted to photograph brie as alice in wonderland. we went to an abandoned amusement park, and the whole alice-in-wonderland concept didn't really pan out, visually. but thematically, it works for me - alice is about being displaced, confused, and lost - all the while retaining this childlike solemnity and practicality and i think brie's expressions really lend themselves to that. and i still like the eerie, decrepit feel of the torn-down rides and, because it was drizzling pretty much the entire time we were there, the misty quality of the light.

there were obviously no seats on the "tilt-a-whirl"; brie was perched very precariously on metal.

[caption id="attachment_96" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""It would be so nice if something made sense for a change...""][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_97" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""Well, when one's lost, i suppose it's good advice to stay where you are until someone finds you. But-but who'd ever think to look for me here?""][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_99" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""I want to go home! But I can't find my way." / "Naturally. That's because you have no way. All ways here are the queen's way.""][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_100" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""Then it really doesn't matter which way you go.""][/caption]

there are film shots of this adventure as well - i'm excited to see how they turn out.

[caption id="attachment_101" align="alignnone" width="510" caption=""Twas brillig, and the slithy toves, did gyre and gimble in the wabe...""][/caption]

i think this last one is my favorite (of course, as it was the last set of the day):

[caption id="attachment_105" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption=""I was just giving myself some good advice...""][/caption]

alice in wonderland is my favorite movie of all time. i used to watch it every night before i went to bed, and i could probably write a thesis on why i relate so powerfully to the symbolism and themes of the story. but i won't bore you with that. i'll just say that anybody who's been lost knows just how good it feels to wake up from your bad dreams and be told, 'it's time for tea.' <3
